Putty or glaze and reprime to create a sandwich effect. Benjamin Moore offers a complete selection of Moorlastic Caulking Compounds.

Glossy surfaces under eaves, and all protected areas not exposed to normal weathering, are to be dulled by sanding. Crystalline deposits that develop on these areas are a major cause of peeling; they must be removed by flushing with a strong stream of water from a garden hose.

Mildew must be removed by scrubbing or power wash equipment, using a commercial mildew wash. CAUTION: Follow manufacturer's directions; use rubber gloves, work goggles, and protective clothing.

Surfaces that have been defaced with marking pens, crayons, lipsticks, etc., should be washed with solvents, then spot-primed with Moore's Fresh Start Acrylic Primer (023), Moore's SPS Stain Killer (340), or Moore's QD 30 (202) to control residual "bleeding."

B. WOOD - to be enameled (floors)

Remove all blistered, peeling and scaling paint to a sound substrate by scraping and sanding. Where bare wood is exposed, spot prime with Moore's Porch & Floor Enamel (112), Enhance Porch, Floor & Deck Enamel (132), or Moore's IMC Urethane Alkyd Gloss Enamel (M22) before applying an overall coat.

Glossy surfaces must be dulled by sanding.

Cracks, crevices, and joints should be caulked to combat water seepage into the substrate or adjoining surfaces.

C. WOOD - To be stained (rough-sawn textured or smooth siding, shakes, and shingles)

Previously stained, or unstained weathered surfaces must be aggressively cleaned with a stiff fibre brush to remove "dead" wood fibers.

Loose or warped siding and shingles should be nailed flush with the surface using coated nails.

All loose or split caulking is to be removed and replaced.

If mildew is evident, it must be removed by scrubbing or power wash equipment using a commercial mildew wash. Particular attention should be given to overhead surfaces such as eaves, overhangs, porch and carport ceilings. Caution: Follow manufacturer's directions; use rubber gloves, work goggles, and protective clothing.

D. WOOD - Natural (doors, trim, siding)

Surfaces to be converted to paint should be prepared as prescribed under "Wood - to be painted," then primed with Moore's Primer (100), Moore's Latex Exterior Primer (102), Moorcraft Super Spec Alkyd Exterior Primer (176) or Moorcraft Super Spec Latex Exterior Primer (169).

Clear finishes that have deteriorated must be removed with paint and varnish remover, the surface sanded thoroughly and given 3 coats Impervo 440 Spar Varnish.

Clear finishes in good condition to be sanded and refinished with 2 coats Impervo 440 Spar Varnish.

Clear stained finishes in good condition are to be sanded and washed then refinished with Moorwood Penetrating Clear Wood Finish and Preservative (088).

E. METAL - Structural or Plate Steel

All surfaces must be free of grease and oil, and cleaned in accordance with SSPC-SP1-63, "Solvent Cleaning," followed by removal of all loose, scaling paint by hand scraping, or by the use of power tools. Rusted surfaces should be cleaned in accordance with SSPC-SP2-63, "Hand Tool Cleaning," or SSPC-SP3-63, "Power Tool Cleaning."

Coat surface where all traces of rust cannot be removed with Moore's IMC Rust Converter (M82) or Moore's IMC Rust Pretreatment (M84).

Glossy surfaces should be dulled by sanding. Where heavy rust, corrosion and deteriorated coatings exist, the surface should be abrasive blast cleaned in accordance with SSPC-SP6-63, "Commercial Blast Cleaning." The surface should be blown off with compressed air to remove traces of blast products, and must be primed within 24 hours with IronClad Alkyd Low Lustre Metal & Wood Enamel (163), IronClad Latex Low Lustre Metal & Wood Enamel (363), Moore's IMC Acrylic Metal Primer (M04), Moore's IMC Alkyd Metal Primer (M06), or Moore's IMC Universal Metal Primer (M07).

F. METAL - Galvanized

All surfaces must be free of grease and oil and shall be cleaned in accordance with SSPC-SP1-63, "Solvent Cleaning." Galvanized Metal buildings may be cleaned using high pressure spray method.

Peeling and scaling paint and chalk must be removed by scraping, sanding and wire brushing. Rusted surfaces must be cleaned by scraping, sanding and wire brushing, then primed with one of Benjamin Moore's rust inhibitive paints or Moore's IMC Acrylic Metal Primer (M04) or Moore's IMC Rust Converter (M82).

Weathered, unpainted galvanized metal surfaces must be wire brushed or power washed to remove deposits of "white rust," then primed with Ironclad Latex Low Lustre Metal & Wood Enamel (363) or Moore's IMC Acrylic Metal Primer (M04). Rusted areas must be sanded clean, and spot primed with Ironclad Latex Low Lustre Metal & Wood Enamel (363) or Moore's IMC Acrylic Metal Primer (M04), then coated overall with Ironclad Latex Low Lustre Metal & Wood Enamel (363) or Moore's IMC Acrylic Metal Primer (M04).

Remove all peeling and scaling paint to as sound substrate by hand scraping, use of mechanical grinders or with high pressure spray equipment.

If mildew is present, it must be removed by scrubbing with a commercial mildewcide wash formulated for this purpose. CAUTION: Follow manufacturer's directions; use rubber gloves, work goggles, and protective clothing.

Multiple coats of paint that are in an advanced state of deterioration and prior applications of cement based paints must be removed by sandblasting or by the use of mechanical grinder.

All structural cracks and crevices are to be filled with appropriate patching compounds.
